In November 2022, TIME featured groundbreaking experimental study findings that could change how policing services are delivered and improve community safety and satisfaction, particularly in high crime areas.
With donor support and in partnership with Arnold Ventures, scientists at the National Policing Institute, George Mason University, Arizona State University, and University of Pennsylvania conducted the experimental study over a several year period in multiple US cities. The goal of the study was to test whether specialized, intensive training for officers in procedural justice techniques and related topics could give them new tools and improve their contacts with the community thereby allowing them to reduce crime more effectively. In the article, Dr. David Weisburd of George Mason University and Chief Science Advisor for the National Policing Institute, discusses how policing can be improved using the power of science and experiments such as this.
