Event Overview
Across the nation, what are the majority of law enforcement officers doing most often while at work? Driving. Given the amount of driving you do, including emergency response driving, it should be no surprise that one of the leading risks to your safety is the risk of being involved in a motor vehicle collision.
In fact, between 2012 and 2017, an estimated 34,700 officers visited a hospital emergency department for a transportation-related injury, equating to roughly 5,783 officers injured in motor vehicle-related incidents annually, or 111 per week (Tiesman et al., 2020). If driving is one of the most frequent and dangerous activities during your shift, driver training is critical for your professionalism as a law enforcement officer and your safety.
This webinar seeks to improve your hazard perception (ability to detect hazards in the driving environment) and decision-making while behind the wheel of your patrol vehicle by teaching you about a driving technique called commentary driving. At the end of this presentation, attendees will be able to define commentary driving, explain the benefits of this cutting-edge technique, and identify and describe the three elements of commentary driving.
