Bio

Chris Vallejo, newly appointed Chief of Police for the Topeka Police Department, brings over 30 years of distinguished law enforcement experience. A proven innovator and strategic leader, Chief Vallejo previously served as a senior commander with the Austin Police Department, overseeing the Special Victims Division and other specialized units and earning recognition for operational excellence and community impact.

A lifelong advocate of evidence-based policing, Chief Vallejo holds a Master’s in Criminal Justice and a Bachelor’s in Applied Arts and Science, with specializations in constitutional law and political science. He is a graduate of the Police Executive Research Forum’s Senior Management Institute for Police Leadership and a recipient of the prestigious NIJ LEADS Scholar fellowship, reflecting his commitment to modern, research-driven policing.

Nationally recognized for his work in police reform and community trust-building, Chief Vallejo has collaborated with organizations and institutions dedicated to racial equity and justice. As a National Policing Institute Executive Fellow, he advises on contemporary issues, shaping best practices in 21st-century policing and officer wellness.

Honored with numerous accolades, including the Meritorious Unit Citation and multiple Patrol Unit of the Year Awards, Chief Vallejo is dedicated to fostering trust, integrity, and collaboration as he leads Topeka PD in delivering exceptional public safety to its diverse communities.
