Technology Innovations in Public Safety

The National Policing Institute (NPI) supports law enforcement and public safety agencies by providing resources and technical assistance around new and emerging technologies and strategies around building digital trust with their communities.

Project Overview

Technology is ubiquitous in public safety. New and emerging technologies can provide immeasurable technical, tactical, and outcome benefits to law enforcement agencies and the communities they serve. Agencies have deployed them to identify innovative and evidence-based solutions to chronic crime challenges, enhance partnerships and services, and enhance public safety.

The goal of this project is to develop a series of resources and training tools that highlight important technologies, their roles in contributing to community and officer safety, promising practices and lessons learned, and how law enforcement can engage community stakeholders to build digital trust to ensure that these technologies can be leveraged to plan, prepare for, and respond to First Amendment assemblies and mass demonstrations. The resources will be developed in collaboration with law enforcement and public safety leaders, subject matter experts, and other relevant stakeholders. Each resource will be and made available individually so that agencies can select which one(s) are applicable to their needs.

Methodology

NPI is hosting a series of virtual regional roundtables to develop shared understandings of use cases and generate critical themes and considerations for law enforcement seeking to build digital trust and leverage emerging technologies to advance public safety. NPI is also developing a series of resources that highlight important technologies, their roles in contributing to community and officer safety, promising practices and lessons learned, and building digital trust to ensure that technologies can be leveraged to plan, prepare for, and respond to First Amendment assemblies and mass demonstrations. The resources will be developed in collaboration with law enforcement and public safety leaders, subject matter experts, and other relevant stakeholders.

Results

The Building Digital Trust Promising Practices Guide and a series of executive briefs and resources will be available in September 2021.
