Ending the Cycle of Violence: Leveraging Community Buy-in to Identify Serial Shooters

Track: Leadership

NPI Staff: Kerry Yerico

Gun violence is a leading cause of premature death in communities across the United States. While research shows that a small number of offenders are responsible for a large percentage of violence, law enforcement is often faced with the challenge of identifying these offenders and bringing them to justice. The Bureau of Justice Assistance, through its Local Law Enforcement Crime Gun Intelligence Center (CGIC) Integration Initiative, has provided agencies with the tools and resources needed to address increasing gun violence. This panel will highlight how the use of the National Integrated Ballistics Information Network (NIBIN) in conjunction with community outreach has enabled law enforcement agencies to identify and apprehend the most prolific offenders in their jurisdictions.
